Anyone who develops an eye for the natural world quickly realises how much there is to see. If you happen to live anywhere even moderately rural then you only have to step outside your home and it’s all around you. Draw an imaginary 2m (6′) radius circle around your feet and from there to the sky is a column of life. You may have to get down on your knees or squint upwards a bit but you will pretty well always find something new to see.
Children are experts at this, or used to be before they became encased in protective bubble wrap. I spent half my childhood crawling around in fields watching the life in the undergrowth. For many of us, when we grow up, we forget this skill. The habit of seeing the natural world becomes lost in the daily grind to just get on. Things accelerate and become more complicated, more serious.
I wanted to correct this in myself. I wanted to get back to really seeing the world around me, to really noticing it, and I have succeeded in this to some extent. But then I found that I wanted to record what I noticed, as much to prove to myself that I really was walking around with my eyes open. So, if I’m going to record things anyway, why not share?
Maybe also sometimes people have an itch they just need to scratch. This then is one of mine.
