Sometimes it’s the simplest things that catch the eye – and that give the most pleasure.  Late Autumn afternoon sunlight on larch needles after hours of rain.  Larch is beautiful at most times of the year but from October through to December it is arguably at its best.

Larch needles in full Autumn colours

Being the only native deciduous conifer in Great Britain (and Europe) the larch needles change their hue and colour gradually in one of the most fabulous displays of the year.  One single branch can yield everything from Spring green through the yellows and oranges all the way to brown and even fiery red.  Such a display, viewed in suitable light, is one of the finest gifts of Autumn and surely worth a few minutes of anyone’s time.
