Last weekend (10th/11th September) I heard and saw my first skein of geese arriving for the winter. I’m late recording this but I just wanted to ensure I did for my own phenological purposes; although I’ll probably forget next year.
I have no idea what they were – too high and my skills aren’t good enough – but they are a road-sign to winter that is unmistakable. The slide into longer, darker evenings is all a little depressing. But still, there are benefits. Like log fires, and the strangely comforting sound of geese on the wing.
